Maintaining your well water system is important. Education and practice of regular well maintenance will not only help reduce risks to your current system, but also prevent expensive and inconvenient repairs.

Say you just bought a piece of property and you're looking to build a house, or you moved into a home that already runs off of a well system. Regardless of the situation you probably don’t have a manual with answers to all your questions. That seems to be alright until you run into a problem, but knowing some of the basics could be very helpful.

According to the National Ground Water Association, here are some steps you can take to help protect your well:

  • Wells should be checked and tested ANNUALLY for mechanical problems, cleanliness, and the presence of certain contaminants, such as coliform bacteria, nitrates/nitrites, and any other contaminants of local concern, (for example, arsenic and radon).
  • Well water should be tested more than once a year if there are recurrent incidents of gastrointestinal illness among household members or visitors and/or a change in taste, odor, or appearance of the well water.
  • All hazardous materials, such as paint, fertilizer, pesticides, and motor oil, should be kept far away from your well.
  • When mixing chemicals, do not put the hose inside the mixing container, as this can siphon chemicals into a household’s water system.
  • Consult a professional contractor to verify that there is proper separation between your well, home, waste systems, and chemical storage facilities.
  • Always check the well cover or well cap to ensure it is intact. The top of the well should be at least one foot above the ground.
  • Once your well has reached its serviceable life (usually at least 20 years), have a licensed or certified water well driller and pump installer decommission the existing well and construct a new well. Water Dr replaced my well pump and drop piping this week, Their prices were competitive and our service tech Josh was friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. He noticed that our well cap was a driller's cap and not a sealed well cap required by code. He also noticed that there was no check valve anywhere along the 280 feet of drop pipe. Our previous well company replaced our well pump back in 2002 and never mentioned any of this. Josh also gave me other great tips on the type of filter to use for my water system and how many times to change it during the year to help prevent the rings in our toilet bowls caused by excess iron. Water Dr just gained a new customer for life Thank you Matt (owner) and Josh for doing such a great job!!!!!!!!!!!

I contacted WaterDR for a mitigation system for a high Radon reading after a home inspection. I spoke directly with one of the technician’s “Joe “ he was absolutely polite and informative. We needed him to come the following day! I have to say they were on time and very professional. After fully explaining everything they immediately began to work. They were excellent, they finished the job in about 3 hours. They cleaned up their debris as if they were never there. I am happy to report that because of the system my Radon level was way below the minimum standards. I would very much recommend this company to anyone. Thanks again for the piece of mind.

After my water unexpectedly decided to stop working one night, I called The Water Doctor and I’m so glad I did. They were at my door the next morning (only because it was so late at night when I called) and got the water running temporarily even though my problems were so severe. They knew exactly what to do and they are so understanding that if you don’t have water you can’t live without it! If you have a water problem and want great service and the best price, these are the only guys to call for a fast and friendly solution.

Amazing service! I would highly recommend this company. Our water suddenly stopped working around 6 pm. We called Water Dr and Joey came out within 15 minutes. He was nice, professional, and very knowledgeable. He worked hard in the dark to make sure we got our pump fixed so that we could get water back ASAP. 5 Stars!

These guys are a pleasure to deal with and will not leave you “dry” …worked till after 9pm to ensure we we’re up and running..and the techs are well versed in their trade! A professional outfit!! They found we had a deep well, and went back to get their “new rig” (at 6pm) and had the pump pulled and changed, system pressure tested, and a new pressure tank fitted In basement and water running by 9:30. Now that’s service!!!!

Woke up to no water. Called Water Dr. at 7:35. Someone was at my house before 9 AM. Workers were friendly and efficient and clearly explained everything. Everything was completed by 10:30 and I was giving clear instructions on what should be done over the next 24 hours. I will definitely be calling them again for any future water needs/issues.

Josh was awesome. Visited Saturday morning for a service, we needed a system change. Back out Monday, work was clean fast and he explained everything. Highly recommend.

This company was amazing. We are selling our home and the inspection showed well contamination and radon in the basement. They came out on the appointment day and addressed both problems the same day even though it was later in the evening. They were very knowledgeable and explained everything in detail so we understood the process. I would highly recommend them.

They are very responsive. I had them install my filter system and now they come to clean. Friendly, honest and organized. THANK YOU

Josh and the other technicians at Water Doctor are real experts and extremely knowledgeable. Even better, for the one obscure piece of equipment I had they had little experience with, they admitted they would have to check with someone else in the company before rending an opinion. These guys are honest, smart, ethical and have fair pricing. They won’t sell you in stuff you don’t need, but are honest and will demonstrate why some things need to be replaced. I highly recommend them without reservation.
